The Joy of Wooden Dollhouses


For hundreds of years people have enjoyed the charm and beauty of a wooden dollhouse. Whether it was the Europeans and their cabinet display cases, known as baby dollhouses, or the large wooden dollhouses of today. The enjoyment of the dollhouses is as strong as ever.

There are many types of dollhouses, including Victorian,  Tudor, and Gregorian, as well as varying styles. Regardless of the type or style, a dollhouse becomes a cherished item for the creator and collector. There is something magical about the imagination and personality that is added to each completed house.

For children, it is a way of practicing to be an adult. Their imagination taking hold as they pretend to manage a family in their own imaginary world. This fantasy world becomes more real than any television show or video game ever could become. Their enjoyment with their dollhouse will carry on into their adulthood, where it will become a cherished keepsake.

Adults, while they don’t need to pretend to manage a family, are taken to their own fantasy world, nonetheless. Theirs may consist of more romance and intrigue than a child’s world. They are taken back to the period of the house, a time which they may not have physically lived through, but in their imagination they can visit that time.

Many spend many years creating their dollhouse, personalizing every aspect of the finished work of art.Each piece of furniture in each room is carefully selected and placed. The materials used are determined by the creator’s personality right down to the pillows on the beds. The look and feel of a wooden dollhouse becomes an extension of the owner’s personality and passion for the art. Each dollhouse becomes unique as each person is unique.

Dollhouses are also a great way of a parent spending time with their children. As both a child and and adult can enjoy the same dollhouse, have both participate in it’s creation, and joining the same imaginary world can help cement the bond between the child and their parent. The child can then grow up, and when they have a family of their own, they can invite their children into their fantasy world with the same dollhouse. A single dollhouse and fantasy can endure through several generations.

The joy of a wooden dollhouse is one that spans generations from young to old. It is something that is cherished, remembered, and loved through the years.
